Rated as the 8th largest economy in the world according to the IMF, being a member of the elite G8 group, and bolstering a GDP of over $1.3 trillion per year, the Canadian economy offers business owners and entrepreneurs vast opportunities to capture markets and benefit from commercial ventures. The traditional industry of agriculture has been surpassed by earnings from an increasingly diverse service sector which incorporates retail, finance, tourism and entertainment, technology, education and real estate. This thriving sector now accounts for nearly 70% of GDP, employing approximately 70% of working Canadians.
Recent analysis of the economy conducted by Statistics Canada reported that following a decline at the end of 2008, sales in the service industry have steadily been rising, with September 2009 representing a full percent increase. Budget 2009, was released by the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance in order to represent a comprehensive budget plan for Canada to stimulate economic growth, restore confidence and support Canadians and their families and therefore boost the economy.
Providing almost $30 billion in support to the Canadian economy this year, the Canada Economic Action Plan is providing an equivalent of 1.9 per cent of our total economy. The plan is aimed to stimulate the economy through expanding and accelerating federal investment in infrastructure, including roading, health and technology, providing over $20 billion in personal tax income relief, and increase funding to improve housing and the enhancement of energy efficiency.
A notable function of this budget is allocation of $200 billion through the Extraordinary Financing Framework, which will help to improve access to the consumer and business financing needed to invest, grow and create new jobs. Additionally, services are being formed that will provide support to businesses and communities by providing an extra $7.5 billion to ensure the protection of jobs, targeting the automotive, forestry and manufacturing sectors.
A further government initiative to provide assistance to entrepreneurs and stimulate growth is through the BizPal program. This online tool is designed to facilitate reduced processing times for business start ups. Being headed by all three levels of government, the program aims to simplify the business licence and permit process by removing much of the red tape in setting up and running a business, with the goal that businesses will able to form and start operating faster, giving entrepreneurs more time growing their business.
In addition to BizPal, the Economic Action Plan has also introduced a number of initiatives to ensure businesses create wealth and employment opportunities, while increasing their access to finance and offering tax incentives.
